I remember Sandia Labs was working on inertial confinement back in the mid-1980s when I did some summer work there during college. I would be very curious to learn how the field evolved since those days.

I was always hoping for a tabletop sonoluminescence fusion solution but it was unclear how far away from fusion pressures and temperatures that system operated. The emission spectrum said temperatures were at least 200,000 K during light flashes.

What was the energy? They reported > 1 MW, and then could not reproduce (got only 700 kW or something like that). So this is based on new tests?

It worked! It is a real breakthrough. We’ll see if congress will start funding the research at the level needed to bring fusion to the grid. 😉

I would be curious to get Siggy’s take on yesterday’s press releases about fusion power breakthroughs.

As usual, XKCD.com is on top of it:
