At the risk of mentioning what you already know ... the correct behaviour is defined by RFC 3230.

In particular, the server should simply ignore requested algorithms if it doesn't understand or support them.

For example, if the server doesn't understand unknown-alg then a request with:

Want-Digest: adler32, unknown-alg

should be treated the same as a request for:

Want-Digest: adler32
