@ccaffy - additionally, this case caught my eye:

$ curl -I -H "Want-Digest: DOES_NOT_EXIST" -L https://localhost:1096/tmp/bigfile_5M_copy
HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Connection: Keep-Alive
Content-Length: 5242880
Digest: unknown=dias4A==

The behavior is almost correct -- I think it's returning the default (adler32) checksum in your case. The digest should be labelled as adler32 and not "unknown", however.
