I can confirm ls of a directory through a cache on a redirector does not work in the described way. XCache log:
230214 13:05:33 4004652 XrootdXeq: matevz.4004673:[log in to unmask] pub IPv6 login
230214 13:05:33 4004652 matevz.4004673:[log in to unmask] Xrootd_Protocol: rc=0 stat /store/user/matevz/
230214 13:05:33 4004652 matevz.4004673:[log in to unmask] Xrootd_Protocol: locate nuD */store/user/matevz/
230214 13:05:33 4004652 matevz.4004673:[log in to unmask] Xrootd_Protocol: rc=-1024 locate */store/user/matevz/
230214 13:05:34 4004652 ofs_opendir: matevz.4004673:[log in to unmask] Unable to open directory /store/user/matevz/; no such file or directory
230214 13:05:34 4004652 XrootdXeq: matevz.4004673:[log in to unmask] disc 0:00:01
If cache's origin is set to a data server, directory ls does work. ls of a file works also through a redirector.
