Hi Doug,
unfortunately, there is no way to do this. The script should only stop the
instances that were started by it and not the others that may be running on a
given machine for whatever reason. The only source of knowledge which
instances should be handled is the sysconfig file, so if you want to
remove/rename an instance you should stop it first by saying:
service xrootd stop instance_name
