Hi Doug,
your observation after removing 'sss' isn't contradict to Andy's explanation.
After 'sss' is removed, xrootdfs pass user id 'xrootd' to xrootd servers
(regardless of whether you do 'su' or not). Since user 'xrootd' can do
anything according to your authorization file, your command return
successfully
