Hi Everyone,
We'll meet for our regular weekly LQS group meeting this Thursday, Oct. 2,
at 1 PM Eastern. Call-in info is 510-665-5437, passcode 7336 (the usual
numbers).
I wonder if someone locally at M.I.T. could try to reserve a meeting
room for a standing reservation for the fall term?
The paper for discussion this week concerns a search for Lorentz and CPT
violation using the resonant behavior of the earth-ionosphere cavity. The
paper has links to many other types of searches for Lorentz/CPT violation
including some by BaBar. This topic has close M.I.T. ties as it uses
earth-ionosphere resonant frequences reported by Lincoln Lab in 1960
(see ref. 6, attached as a pdf file) and also refers to work by Jackiw,
notably in regard to vacuum birefringence. The paper itself is by M. Mewes,
"Bounds on Lorentz and CPT Violation from the Earth-Ionosphere Cavity",
at http://arxiv.org/abs/0809.4801. This paper is also attached as pdf.
It has a lot of algebra (which I skimmed), but seems interesting as an
introduction to this fascinating subject.
Suggestions for papers to review in future meetings are always welcome!
Thanks,
--Ray
